Suddenly You...

What is the Stock Market & How Can I Start Investing?

Suddenly You… are investing in stocks for the first time!

You’re excited but a little apprehensive because whenever discussions with friends or family pivots to the stock market, you grow silent. Maybe it’s because you didn’t have money available for investing in stocks before, or you just didn’t have any working knowledge about the stock market.

No worries! Either way, I’m here to help you grow.

My earliest involvement with the stock market was in a high school economics class. We were assigned homework to select and track the daily closing price of three stocks. Looking back, it was such a simple assignment, but it started my lifelong love of investing.

Fun fact! It might surprise you to know that the stock market is actually WAY older than Wall Street. Historically, it dates back to the 13th century in Europe, and started about 500 years before the U.S. stock market began in the 18th century.

Definitionally, the stock market is a place to buy and sell public company stocks. You don’t go to the physical stock market like you would a food market. Instead, you access it electronically through your computer or smartphone.

The stock market matches buyers and sellers for a specific company stock at a defined price. Lots of large companies like Apple, Ford, Microsoft, and Disney sell stock to raise money to build factories, expand, or begin operations. These public company shares are listed on an exchange such as the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) or the NASDAQ (National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations – I KNOW! What a mouthful, right?!). In general, younger and smaller companies list on the NASDAQ, while larger, more mature companies can be found on the NYSE.

Stock markets exist worldwide in major cities like London, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. Your investing will generally take place in the U.S. stock market, where you can also buy or sell shares in one of the 500 non-U.S. companies like Sony, Shopify, TD Bank, and Ferrari.

To learn more about investing in the stock market for beginners and investing for women specifically, join the waitlist for the Suddenly You Society coming in 2026. That’s where I’ll teach more in-depth about how to START investing for women. I’ll help you understand investing goals, rules, vocabulary- you name it!

We’ll also go through a number of scenarios to help you make SMART investment decisions, whether you’re working with a tight budget and investing small amounts of money, or have more substantial funds to work with. We also talk at length about how life events, marital status, number of children (or no kids), aging parents, and your own age ALL affect what you should be doing with your money over time.

I’m SO EXCITED for you! This is such a big moment!

Investing can be incredibly rewarding, and taking that first step is a huge achievement. Let’s continue your path to gain the knowledge and confidence you need to make smart choices about your money and feel in control of your financial future!
